English Electric, and their subsidiary Stephenson and Hawthorne at Darlington made numerous diesel locomotives during the late 1950s for export but also as part of British Railï¾’s massive modernisation programme when fleets of steam engines were being replaced nationwide. Photographed by Walter Nurnberg who transformed industrial photography after WWII using film studio lighting techniques.
