'Children In Tree', 1898.
A photograph of four children climbing a tree, taken by their father, Edgar Tarry Adams on 13 April,1898. Adams had five children - three boys and two girls - all born in the 1880s. Here we see Pauline (1889-1969) at the top of the tree with Isobel (born 1885) below her, Gordon (1887-1944) on the left and Francis (1882-1973) behind him. His other son, Rodney, died aged just three months, in 1884. Adams was a wealthy and dedicated amateur photographer. The owner of a brewery in Halstead, Essex, he was a figure of authority and played a prominent role in local affairs. Adams first took up photography in the 1880s and carried on taking photographs until after World War One, creating a fascinating social record of his family, friends and interests.
