Sir H Nigel Gresley, railway engineer, March 1938.

Sir H Nigel Gresley (1876-1941) was the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London and North Eastern Railway. Photographed at the Doncaster Works with the A4 Pacific No 4498 he designed and which was named after him.  Born in Edinburgh in 1876, Gresley was first apprenticed to the London and North Western Railway at Crewe, before working for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway at the Horwich Works, where he rose to the post of Assistant Superintendent (1904). He then joined the Great Northern Railway and by 1911 was Chief Mechanical Engineer, responsible for the design of locomotives and carriages. He continued in this post when the Great Northern was absorbed into the LNER in 1923, and was knighted for his services to the railway industry in 1936.
