Oil painting by Spencer made 1875-1880, showing the 'Torrens', an iron sailing ship built at the James Lang shipyard at Sunderland for Elder & Co. Designed for carrying passengers, the Torrens sailed between Plymouth and Port Adelaide, Australia, regularly between 1875 and 1903. She was one of the fastest ships of her type to sail the route, with a best passage of 68 days. She was sold to an Italian firm in 1903, and was broken up at Genoa, Italy in 1910.
